June is one of the most underrated and rewarding times for bear viewing in Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks. With far fewer visitors on the coastline, our wheel plane bear viewing excursions offer rare access to remote locations like Douglas, Silver Salmon Creek, Chinitna Bay, Swishak, and Hallo Bay — places where brown bears roam freely along open beaches, sedge flats, and tidal estuaries with minimal human presence. In June, bears are actively grazing, digging for clams, and moving long distances across the coast, creating constant viewing opportunities and natural, unscripted wildlife encounters that feel untouched and wild.
Unlike short, high-volume day tours from Anchorage, our lodge-based full-day bear viewing adventures offer a far more intimate experience. Weather permitting, it is possible to make multiple landings along Katmai and Lake Clark’s remote coastline, combining extended time with bears and dramatic volcano and glacier flightseeing over Redoubt, Iliamna, and surrounding peaks. This flexibility allows us to follow the best conditions in real time — creating a quieter, more immersive experience that simply isn’t possible on fixed half-day tours.
Lake Clark Lodge
Our property is conveniently located within a one hour flight from Anchorage making it one of the most convenient ways to explore both Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks. With a maximum of 16 guests nightly, our adventure lodge hosts over a dozen experiences and trip options, from short visits to week-long retreats. Our activities include bear viewing, fishing, hiking, flightseeing, national park tours and more.

Observing brown bears along the Katmai and Lake Clark coast in June is the closest thing America has to stepping into a real-life Jurassic Park. This is peak season for mating behavior, heightened territorial displays, and one of the best times of year to see sows with young cubs exploring the sedge flats and tidal zones. Bears are thick-coated, powerful, and actively competing for early-season food sources, creating constant movement, interaction, and drama in the open. Our wheel planes land directly on remote beaches between tides, placing you next to towering sea cliffs that feel completely untouched by time. With few visitors and endless daylight, June delivers a raw and cinematic bear viewing experience.
June is also one of the most productive times of year for wolf viewing along the Katmai and Lake Clark coastline and surrounding tundra valleys. With long daylight hours, active den sites, and abundant early-season food sources, wolves are far more visible as they travel beaches, sedge flats, and river corridors hunting and moving pups between rendezvous areas. From the air, moose are also frequently seen moving through willow bottoms, lake edges, and braided river systems—especially cows with calves—making the flight itself a wildlife safari. These June fly-outs combine wolf viewing, moose sightings, and glacier-lined flightseeing into one of the most dynamic and visually rich wildlife experiences in Alaska.
